TRC for NRIs: Resources & Articles
For Non-Resident Indians earning income in India while residing in the United States, United Kingdom, or UAE, the Tax Residency Certificate determines the tax treatment applied to that income. A TRC formally confirms your tax residency in your country of residence, allowing you to claim benefits under India's DTAA rather than being taxed twice on the same income. Without it, Indian authorities and financial institutions typically apply the default, higher withholding rate.
A TRC is often confused with RNOR status but the two serve different purposes. A TRC proves residency abroad for treaty purposes, while RNOR is a separate classification under Indian law that applies to NRIs who have recently returned to India. Applications for a TRC are most commonly delayed due to PAN detail mismatches or incomplete residency proof, and the certificate is generally valid for one financial year, requiring annual renewal to maintain uninterrupted DTAA benefits.
Establishing your residency status correctly avoids excess TDS deduction and filing discrepancies. Consult our TRC services to ensure your DTAA entitlements are claimed correctly.
